#CATHISTORY: In the 1930's. The white male cat, named Napoleon, lived with his owner in Baltimore. His observant owner, Mrs. de Shields, noted that every time before it rained Napoleon would lie on the floor with his front paws extended and tuck his head between them. During Napoleon's lifetime there was a drought. The drought had continued for over a month when his owner noticed the clever cat adopt his "rain on the way" pose. According the official forecast the weather was to continue dry. Unconvinced, Mrs. De Shields telephoned a newspaper and told them that it was going to rain -- her cat had prophesied it. It did indeed rain, and thereafter Napoleon's forecasts were published in the paper. When he died, the tombstone over his grave was inscribed "Napoleon the Weather Prophet 1917 - 1936". It was said that in all the six years that he made his predictions he never got it wrong -- which is more than be said for human meteorologists!
#FAMOUSCATLOVERS: Sultan El Daher Beybars (13th century) Ruler of Egypt and Syria
In his will Sultan El Daher Beybars, who was devoted to cats, bequeathed a garden known as Gheyt-el-Quoltah (the cats' orchard) near his mosque in Cairo for the support of homeless cats. The tradition continues to this day. At the time of afternoon prayer each day, meat is brought into the center of the garden, and cats from all over the city come for their share.
#FAMOUSCATLOVERS: Pope Benedict XVI (born Joseph Alois Ratzinger, 1927- ) Reigning head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City State
His cat Chico, a black-and-white domestic short hair, continues to live at the pope’s home in Tübingen, Germany (pets are not allowed in the Vatican). Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles, who was in Rome for the pope’s inauguration, says “The street talk that the pope loves cats is incorrect. The pope adores cats.”
#CATSHISTORY: Cats were believed to be agents of the devil, and to possess magical powers. Pope Gregory IX declared the cat to be a "Diabolical Creature". Persons that kept cats were suspected of being witches, and were put to death along with their feline pet.
#CATSHISTORY: The oldest archaeological evidence for domesticated cats was found on the Greek island of Cyprus, where several animal species including cats were introduced by 7500 BC. Further, at the Neolithic site of Shillourokambos, a purposeful cat burial was found next to a human burial, dated between 9500-9200 years before the present.
#CATSHISTORY: The first illustration of a cat with a collar appears on an Egyptian tomb in Saqqara, dated to the 5th dynasty (Old Kingdom, ca 2500-2350 BC).
#CATSHISTORY: The American Curl is best known for its unique curled ears, which are the result of a spontaneous mutation. The ears are erect and open; curling away from the cat's face in a graceful arc as opposed to the Scottish Fold's which fold forward and downward. The ears give the breed an alert and happy appearance.
American Curl history began on a sunny day in June 1981 in Lakewood, California. A longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga. Joe encouraged Grace not to feed the kitten, but Grace listening to her heart instead, left a bowl of food on the porch. The affectionate black kitten quickly worked her way into the Ruga's hearts and they named her Shulamith, which means "black but comely".
In December 1981, "Shulamith" delivered her first litter of four kittens. Of the four, two had ears that curled. A geneticist was contacted to study this phenomenon and he confirmed that this unusual ear was a genetic trait and was inherited in every case, causing it to be labelled a dominant gene, with no deformities attached to it. Referred to as a spontaneous mutation, the gene that causes the ear to curl appeared to be following a single dominant pattern.
Selective breeding and presentation of the Curls began in 1983 with American Curls officially accepted for CFA registration in 1986, and for championship competition in February 1993. American Curls were also the first breed to be admitted to the Championship Class as one breed with two coat lengths. Recognised as one of the United States native American breeds, the American Curl makes a wonderful pet and has remained very hearty with no genetic defects associated with the curl gene.
American Curl Seal Tortie Lynxpoint, GC Procurl Harem Louisa May AllCurll bred by Caroline Scott and Michael Tucker of Procurl Harem in New York City.
The ideal American Curl is a medium sized, alert cat with an elegant appearance and a sweet, open expression complimented by their remarkable ears. Due to their domestic ancestry, American Curls are available in both longhair and shorthair with both varieties having soft, silky, lustrous, flat-lying coats. The longhair Curl has the distinction of sporting a beautiful plumed tail. Because both coat lengths have minimal undercoat resulting in non-matting hair, grooming an American Curl is easy. An occasional bath and combing is all that is needed to keep the coat in good condition.
The most distinctive feature of the breed is their uniquely curled ears. The ears are quite firm to the touch, erect and open, curling up into a smooth arc. The American Curl ears have been compared to those of a Lynx with long tufts accentuating the swept back look complimenting the Curl's overall sophistication, stylish elegance, and alluring beauty. Care should be taken when handling the ears to avoid breaking the cartilage.
When Curls are born, their ears are straight, but within three to five days after birth, their ears begin to curl back. During the first 4 months, the kitten's ears will gradually curl and uncurl in varying degrees until they are set permanently at 4 months of age. It is usually around this time that the breeder can determine the quality of the cat based on the ear's degree of curl along with body type. First degree or almost straight is considered a pet, second degree or slightly curved is suitable for breeding, and third degree as show. Third degree is the most desirable curl to the ear, emulating the graceful curve of a full crescent.
American Curl male, GC RW PH Kurled Vonnegut bred by Caroline Scott and Michael Tucker of Procurl Harem in New York City.
In personality, American Curls are very people-oriented, faithful, and affectionate cats. #CATSHISTORY: The Japanese Bobtail is a natural breed that comes from Japan. Unlike many present day breeds, the Japanese Bobtail has existed for centuries. The breed has been depicted in works of art that we know to be centuries old. There is no shortage of Japanese paintings, sculpture and other artwork to demonstrate this point.
This cat is much cherished in its native land; many myths and legends as well as historical stories surround the breed. One of the more famous surrounds the maneki-neko, the beckoning cat, which is a stylised rendition of a Bobtail seated with one paw raised. The paws-up pose is well known. It symbolises "Good Luck" and "Welcome". These ceramic statues based on the traditional Bobtailed cat of Japan are often found in Japanese and Asian shops and homes welcoming visitors.
Japanese Bobtail, CH Kurisumasu Anzu of Kiddlyn of Kiddlyn Cattery in California
The original Bobtailed cats were imported into Japan from south-east Asia over 1,000 years ago. It is said that Japanese silk farmers depended on them to keep the farms free from vermin. However real interest in developing the Japanese Bobtail as a pedigree breed did not begin until after World War II when American residents in Japan came across the Bobtailed cats as pets in Japanese households. The first pair of Bobtails credited as part of a formal breeding programme were imported in 1968. They are recorded as a white male named Richard and a tri-coloured female called Madame Butterfly.
In 1971, the Japanese Bobtail was given provisional status in The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) and was accepted for championship competition in 1976. The longhair Japanese Bobtail was accepted by CFA for championship in 1993.
Japanese Bobtail, CH MJCats Kaji-Kori of Kiddlyn, Kaji of Kiddlyn Cattery in California
The Japanese Bobtail is a chiselled, angular cat standing high on slim, long legs. Though sturdy and well muscled, they are medium in size. The head structure of the Japanese Bobtail is like that of no other breed. The typical Bobtail face is triangular in shape, has high cheekbones, a long, straight nose and oval eyes set with an Oriental slant giving the breed a distinctive Japanese look. Ears are large, broad, upright and set well apart.
The trademark of this breed is its tail. Resembling a "bunny-tail", the fur fans out to form a fluffy pom-pom. The tail is made up of curves, angles or kinks or any combination. The tail may be flexible or rigid and should be of a size and shape that harmonises with the rest of the cat. No two Japanese Bobtails' tails are ever alike. The genetic factor that created the Japanese Bobtail is completely different from the Manx, a naturally tailless cat. It is all down to a recessive gene that breeds true so that only Bobtail to Bobtail matings will produce more Bobtails.
Japanese Bobtail, GC, RW Kiddlyn Shimai of Morriskats, Shimai of Kiddlyn Cattery in California
Japanese Bobtails are active, intelligent, talkative cats. Many describe the Japanese Bobtails as "singing" cats because they tend to chirrup melodiously even entering into entire conversations with their humans. Although they like to talk, they are never noisy and do not have loud voices. Their soft voices are capable of nearly a whole scale of tones. They adore human companionship and get on well with other animals and are particularly good with children. These are strong and active cats that appreciate exercise and most enjoy a good game of fetch. Some even like to swim. Owners find the breed playful, entertaining and loving companions.
This breed is recognised in both shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties. Both coat types are silky and need minimal grooming.

#CATSHISTORY: The Ocicat looks like a small wild spotted cat, but is in fact a fully domestic breed originally created by combining the Siamese, Abyssinian, and American Shorthair. This beautiful spotted domestic cat has been selectively bred to emulate and encapsulate the cat of the wild, with all of its virtues and none of its drawbacks.
The story of the creation of the Ocicat is fascinating, born completely by accident on a challenge. In 1950, Virginia Daly of Dalai Cattery produced ACFA's first Redpoint Siamese female grand champion. She also produced by crossing a Red Persian and a Siamese, the grandmother of the first All-American Flamepoint Himalayan kitten. Along the way she produced a few waves among breeders who raised their eyebrows with scepticism while analysing her feline creations wondering if Daly would try making Abyssinian-pointed Siamese next.
Daly decided to take up the challenge. In 1964, She mated a Sealpoint Siamese female named Tomboy Patter, to a Ruddy Abyssinian champion named Dalai Deta Tim of Selene. Their kittens looked like Abyssinians, but Daly reasoned that they ought to be carrying the Siamese point pattern. She took a female from this litter and bred her to a champion Chocolate Point. A year later Dalai She, a female from this litter, was mated to a Chocolate Point Siamese, Champion Whitehead Elegante Sun. The resulting litter of seven was a rainbow of blacks, chestnuts, sealpoints, chocolate points, lynx points, both mackerel and classic tabbies all courtesy of Patter's daughter. An unanticipated kitten surprised Daly; this tiny little kitten nestled among the rest had dazzling golden spots on an ivory-coloured background. This astonishing kitten is known today as Tonga the first born Ocicat. Daly's daughter was delighted with this tiny kitten and chose the name Ocicat because he so resembled the spotted jungle Ocelot.
Lovely Ocicat bred by Kate Bynum of Catoninetail Cattery in Indiana.
Tonga, the first Ocicat was sold to a medical student named Thomas Brown. When the Detroit newspaper publicised the lovely spotted cat and when noted geneticist, Dr. Clyde Keeler, expressed his desire to see a domestic cat that would mimic some of the vanishing wild species like the long extinct Egyptian spotted fishing cat, the breeding was repeated to produce more Ocicats.
Subsequent breedings of the sire, dam, and other Abyssinians and Siamese formed the foundation of the Ocicat breeding program. American Shorthairs were eventually added to introduce the silver colour, placement of spots, and enhance size and boning. Other breeders followed Mrs. Daly's recipe to develop other Ocicat lines with a broad genetic base. Tonga was never used for breeding purposes, although he did go on exhibition, listed as an 'Ocicat, said to be a reincarnation of the extinct Egyptian Spotted Fishing Cat'.
The Ocicat was recognised for CFA registration in 1966, but it took another twenty years to develop the breed and gain the support for provisional status. The Ocicat was advanced to championship status in May 1987.
The Ocicat is the only spotted domestic breed selectively bred to emulate the cats of the wild.
The ideal Ocicat is a large active cat with an athletic appearance, a solid well-muscled and well-balanced long body. It has a short, close coat with a satin sheen that shows off muscles and well-defined spots to their best advantage. Their short, beautiful coats need only the occasional bathing and grooming.
While Ocicats are wild and athletic in appearance, they have retained the ingenious, people-oriented personality of the Siamese and are thoroughly trustworthy and nonaggressive. Many owners remark on the dog-like tendencies of the breed, in that they are devoted to people, are easily trained and respond well to... <<<<<< N.B from Jumbotweet: auto-truncated at 4K characters on index page - Click here or on the "view" link to see entire jumbotweet! http://www.jumbotweet.com/ltweets/view/9272
#CATFACTS: All cats need taurine in their diet to avoid blindness. Cats must also have fat in their diet as they are unable to produce it on their own.
#CATFACTS: It has been scientifically proven that owning cats is good for our health and can decrease the occurrence of high blood pressure and other illnesses.
#CATSHISTORY: The Devon Rex is known for its soft, short, naturally curly coat and large ears and eyes that give it a pixie-ish appearance.
The Devon Rex originated near a tin mine in Devon, and is distinct from the Cornish Rex, though the coat mutation appears similar. The first Devon Rex was born in 1960, ten years after the first Cornish Rex had been born in Cornwall, England. A Miss Beryl Cox spotted a curly coated tomcat living in an abandoned tin mine in Devon, England. Miss Cox also happened to take in at this time a tortie and white pregnant stray who gave birth to a litter of kittens. In the litter was a curly-coated male kitten which she kept as a pet and named Kirlee.
#CATSHISTORY:The Somali is a breathtaking cat that bears an uncanny resemblance to a little fox, with its large ears, masked face, full ruff and bushy tail. This Semi-longhaired, medium-sized cat has steadily grown in number and popularity.
The Somali story began with Evelyn Mague, an American breeder of Abyssinians who by chance discovered that some Abyssinians carried the Longhair gene. Other breeders saw the beauty of these longer-haired kittens and joined Evelyn in a breeding programme. Evelyn was responsible for naming the Somali, which has often been called an 'Abyssinian in an overcoat'. At the time, Somalia (present-day Ethiopia) was the neighbour of Abyssinia and, not wanting to ignore the new breed's origins, Evelyn chose the name 'Somali'.
#CATSHISTORY: tThe Munchkin is a naturally occurring domestic cat breed characterised by unusually short legs. A spontaneous change in the genetic heritage of the cat has introduced a gene similar to that seen in the Basset Hound, Corgi, and Dachshund, which the Munchkin closely resembles. However these cats have been proven free of the spinal problems sometimes found in the Dachshund.
#CATSHISTORY: the Turkish semi-longhair cat is the oldest recorded domesticated semi-longhair and may be the ancestor of all the other northern hemisphere semi-longhair breeds. Turkish Vans are a rare and ancient breed that developed in central and southwest Asia, which today encompasses the countries of Iran, Iraq, southwest Soviet Union and eastern Turkey. "Van" is a common term in the region with lake Van roughly in the middle.
#CATSHISTORY: The wild cats of today such as Lions and Tigers descended from early carnivores called miacids. From there the modern wild cat developed into three main types; the European wild cat, the African wild cat and the Asiatic desert cat. The domestic cat is thought to have evolved from the African wild cat because of its tabby markings.
#CATSHISTORY: It has been about 4000 years since the first cats were domesticated. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to keep and use cats to control vermin and other pests to protect stores of food. In Ancient Egypt, the cat was revered as a hunter and worshiped as gods and goddesses. The ancient Egyptians imposed the death penalty for killing cats and cats were also mummified before being buried.
#CATSUPERSTITIONS: When moving to a new home, always put the cat through the window instead of the door, so that it will not leave. - American superstition
#CATSUPERSTITIONS: To reverse the bad luck curse of a black cat crossing your path, first walk in a circle, then go backward across the spot where it happened and count to 13.
#CATSUPERSTITIONS: When you see a one-eyed cat, spit on your thumb, stamp it in the palm of your hand, and make a wish. The wish will come true. - American superstition
