@ParisJackson Would you be able to help a 501c3 charity in Kentucky that easies the lives of deaf children throughout the state of Kentucky? I am writing to ask for your assistance to help Kentucky School for the Deaf. If a monetary donation is not possible we would be extremely thankful for anything that can be sold at a silent/ live auction to raise funds for KSD.
The Kentucky School for the Deaf Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established to enrich the educational experiences of students at Kentucky School for the Deaf and for deaf students throughout the state.
One way to enrich deaf students’ educational experiences is to bring these students together with hearing students in educational projects, problem-solving tasks, sharing products and engaging socially through video conferencing.. In a similar way, deaf students in the state, isolated from their deaf peers at KSD by distance and other barriers, can engage in campus experiences with KSD students through video conferencing.
For our video conferencing projects we are seeking funding for the following:
1. Furnishing the elementary school video conferencing room with appropriate chairs and worktables. The room is used several times a month by K-5 students as well as at least once a month by all students in larger group videoconferences. The total cost for 5 folding tables and 26 chairs is $1,304.57. This bid is based on special pricing through Central Kentucky Educational Coop (CKEC)
2. Purchasing a subscription to MAGPI, a nationally recognized non-profit videoconferencing service. The annual subscription cost is $500. This covers a wide variety of projects for K-12 students at no additional cost. Additional video field trips are offered for costs ranging from $50 t0 $250.
4. Purchasing a portable green screen or blue screen backdrop to use when we are videotaping activities that will be featured on a KSD-sponsored videoconference. This will include preparations for the Vice-Presidential Debate at Centre College in October. KSD has been invited to participate in the pre-debate activities. Another project suitable for the green/blue screen will be a video tour of KSD’s history museum, Jacobs Hall Museum, for a video conference with Kentucky deaf students in local schools throughout the state. Our consultants in each Kentucky region will help schools access the tour. Portable green/blue screen kits are widely available (even on eBay). The size we require ranges from $200-300.
We appreciate your sponsorship or donation for this important project.
Sincerely yours,
Chris Anderson

@hollymadison Can you try to help us out, if it is not too much trouble? I am writing to ask for your assistance to help Kentucky School for the Deaf. We have three big projects for which we are seeking outside support. If a monetary donation is not possible we would be extremely thankful for anything that can be sold at a silent/ live auction to raise funds for KSD.
The Kentucky School for the Deaf Charitable Foundation is a non-profit public foundation that supports deaf and hard-of-hearing students both at Kentucky School for the Deaf and throughout the state of Kentucky. Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD), the oldest state-supported school for the Deaf in the US, has 115 students, 70% of whom live on campus from Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon every week. In this time of state budget crunches and cuts, KSD must seek outside help with important activities that are conducted outside of school hours of 8-3:30, Monday-Friday.
1. Family Learning Vacation, June 9-10, 2012. Total budget is$23,000.
FLV is a fun weekend for family members throughout the state who have deaf or hard of hearing children. There are many different workshops, booths, and panels for the adults to learn more about raising a child with a hearing loss. While parents are in workshops, the children are involved in activities to network with and meet other children with hearing loss. In the evenings meals and other activities are scheduled for the entire family and staff. KSD has held a Family Learning Vacation for over twenty years.
Families from across the state are invited. The only criterion is that they have one child who is deaf or hard of hearing between the ages of birth to 21. The goal is to have 30 families participating in the FLV '12 weekend.
The staff will include a core group from KSD's Statewide Family Support Center, a lead Parent Facilitator, workshop/booth presenters, deaf and hard of hearing panelists, and interpreters. The Children's Program Team Leaders and workers will come from a variety of programs and schools across the state, and include both hearing and deaf/hard of hearing adults. It is estimated that a total of 150-180 people (staff and families) will be involved with the FLV '12 weekend.
2. Refurbishing the middle school/high school boys' dormitory (residence for 45 boys, Sunday through Friday for 37 weeks of school)
Tempur-Pedic generously donated mattresses for student beds this year. We are now seeking donations for student study desks, area rugs, chairs and couches, televisions, paint, blinds, small stove for cooking projects, microwave, small refrigerator and other items that make this area, unchanged for more than 15 years, less institutional, more like a home.
3. We are trying to assemble funds for a year-long videoconferencing project with links to other schools with deaf students in the state. Its beginning is supposed to coincide with the lead-up events for the Vice Presidential Debate at Centre.
As I stated above, I don't know the kind of projects you could or would want to help support so I'm describing the three that are most important to us during the next two years.

@JeriLRyan Can you help spread the word? Please take a moment and send a message to Governor Beshear asking him to restore the drastic budget cuts for Kentucky School for the Deaf and Kentucky School for the Blind. The link takes you to a contact page. http://governor.ky.gov/Pages/contact.aspx This important message can also be delivered via phone call or fax.

Dear Governor Beshear,
I am writing you to ask you to consider vetoing a couple of line items on the new budget.
The Budget Spreadsheet document shows on lines 63 and 67 giving a total $400,000 to Lexington Speech & Hearing Center and to Heuser Hearing & Language Academy respectively over the next two years. KDE did not request this funding AND this is happening at the same time as you are cutting both Kentucky School for the Deaf and Kentucky School for the Blind funding. Also, on line 68 there is another $200,000 to be given to Visually Impaired Pre-school Services over two years. Again, not requested by KDE; your own agency that serves visually impaired students.
My point is that this appears to be spending tax dollars to support private businesses. This is compounded by the fact that the state is supposed to be supporting public education at its two state schools for deaf and blind students in Kentucky! The Kentucky Department of Education didn't even ask for this funding and it flies in the face of reason that you would cut your own department(s) for the sake of funneling taxpayer dollars to a for-profit entity. Our students will suffer!
I call for you to veto these items in the budget and restore full-funding to KSD and KSB!

The staff will include a core group from KSD’s Statewide Family Support Center, a lead Parent Facilitator, workshop/booth presenters, deaf and hard of hearing panelists, and interpreters. The Children’s Program Team Leaders and workers will come from a variety of programs and schools across the state, and include both hearing and deaf/hard of hearing adults. It is estimated that a total of 150-180 people (staff and families) will be involved with the FLV ’12 weekend.
2. Refurbishing the middle school/high school boys’ dormitory (residence for 45 boys, Sunday through Friday for 37 weeks of school)
As I stated above, I don’t know the kind of projects you or your company can support so I’m describing the two that are most important to us during the next two years.
Please let me know if any of this falls within your guidelines. I will be delighted to send you more information about our school. Our website is under repair. We anticipate a new launch in March. The KSD Charitable Foundation is registered with the GuideStar organization for non-profits. Here is a link to our foundation’s profile: http://goodgiving.guidestar.org/NonprofitProfile.aspx?OrgId=1060494
We also need to repaint Elementary School (Walker Hall) It hasn’t been done for many years. This is for the school and the residence hall. They have the woman and man power to do it but not the paint.
@askjillian Could you please RT this.
GOOD MORNING ALL!
I think everyone should have all the details about the Pancake Sausage Day by now….If you are able to attend the Pancake & Sausage Day the cost is $5.00 per person. But, just in case I wanted to send a reminder to each of us. The individuals on our committee have been working very hard to make this event a special Homecoming Event/Fundraiser. Now we ask all of you to go out of your way (as you always do) to make it a 100% success!!!!
Starting at 6:30 am we will be serving Breakfast at Grow Hall and will continue to serve throughout the morning and lunch. During this time we will conduct the Silent Auction and the Booths will be open for viewing. At 1:30 pm we begin the Live Auction for ALL to enjoy! The Live Auction will be conducted by CENTURY 21 Wilson Realty & Auction Co. Betsy Wilson, Owner and Tony Wilson, Auctioneer, our very own Angie Crawford & Dawn Calbert as Interpreters and I will be taking bids.
The more people from our community we can get here the better!! Please remember to invite your church members, friends, family and anyone you can think of.
Our raffle tickets are a bargain for what you can win! Rhonda has worked hard at collecting the Raffle Items, including: $150.00, $100.00, $50.00, T.V., Kindell Fire, Tool Box with tools are just to mention a few!
We are asking all departments to please let any of us on the committee know if you will create a Theme Basket…..Theme Baskets are popular and will be great! Time is getting close and we would appreciate being aware of what kind of Theme Baskets are going to be available. If anyone would like to contribute an item for “UK or UofL basket” please send to Barbie Harris and she will fix basket. We know Brady Hall is doing “Horse Basket” & “Valentine Basket”, KSD Cafeteria Staff are doing a “Kitchen Basket”, Walker Hall has a “Rest and Relaxation Basket”, a “Baby Basket”, 1 Surprise Basket Specially Designed for “One of Our Own” (You will know when you see… ) & 2 other Baskets …..what others are out there?
Our Committee will be collecting the items that have been donated and decorations for decorating Grow Hall (which will be a Valentine Theme). If you have any interest in helping out in these last few days it would be greatly appreciated by all!! We have classes distributing flyers and making decorations to help, we have put the information in the Danville Boyle County Chamber News Letter, The Heart of Danville News Letter. JoAnn is working on a News Paper Article in addition to the advertising in the Advocate Messenger. We have the banner up and we are really trying to spread the news on Facebook (If you would post the information on your FB page that would be awesome!)
Please remember that this is an opportunity for our Community to be here and see what KSD is all about…..it is a chance for us to shine like our kids do every day! Please put selling, inviting and volunteering at the top of your priority list over the next several days ! We have lots of exciting donations (we will send out a partial list soon) for the Silent and Live auctions and we need to make sure our buyers are here to spend money…. !
THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT IS MAKING THIS POSSIBLE…WE ARE SURROUNDED BY AWESOME PEOPLE AND AWESOME KIDS AT KSD!!!
