Divide and conquer tactics have been used forever to pit one person against another, or one group of people against another. Those tactics have been used with extreme skill against people of African descent.
Divide and conquer tactics were used against Black slaves by the likes of William Lynch and were institutionalized. Those tactics were used by Americans and Hollywood to paint a negative image of Africa. As a result, Blacks in America didn’t want anything to do with Africa because the image of Africa was so negative.
Those kind of divide and conquer tactics have also been used with Caribbean Blacks. When they come to America, with their distinctive accents, some Whites treat them like a novelty, sort of like a cat that barks. Realizing how bad American Blacks have been treated, they do their utmost to separate or distinguish themselves from American Blacks. It’s the same with many Africans.
Today, you have Africans, Caribbeans, and African Americans all acting like manipulated puppets and not even realizing how they have been manipulated. But no matter how you look at it, it’s all about divide and conquer.
Like most immigrants, Africans and Caribbeans have come to the U.S., and they have done quite well. Due to their successes, many, but not all, have taken a smug and arrogant attitude towards American Blacks.
They believe they are smarter, classier, and more focused. In some cases, they are, but you cannot say that about all of them anymore than you can say all African Americans are the same.
Most immigrants, irrespective of their origins, are driven. Their special drive is what motivated them to leave their homelands. But let’s not assume that the drive of immigrants who came to this country is a unique trait that applies to every other person in their country. In other words, not all Caribbeans or Africans are entrepreneurial and driven. If they were, their homelands would be examples of those qualities, and they wouldn’t have a reason to leave.
Take Jamaica, it is a country that is overwhelmingly black. But Jamaica's economy isn’t controlled by Blacks nor are many of the businesses.
Looking around at staggering unemployment, crime, and rundown neighborhoods, it can be easy for some African Americans to be overly self-critical. But African Americans should not become jaded or dejected. Our group can do better, to be sure. But let us also recognize how far our group has come. Of all the black people on the planet, African Americans are the:
Best educated.
Wealthiest.
Best fed.
Best read.
AND THEY:
Own the most businesses.
Have the most millionaires.
Own the most property.
No other group that has come to America has faced the obstacles that African Americans have faced and still face. And as they say, “And still we rise.” It is imperative for African Americans, Caribbeans and Africans to embrace our brotherhood and sisterhood. When we work together, we can accomplish many good things.
