I'd say that is a good explanation for why there is so much censorship going on right now, and it continues in full force, unabated today. It has never been this intense before, they are taking risks of having the less observant figure it out. And the length of time would be needed to shut down discussion while they stole it as you described. However, I still think it is doubtful. A last hope stab at it when everything else failed.
