World War II began years ago (December). However, the last German soldier did not surrender until 1985. Georg Gartner was captured by the allies in 1943, and sent to a prison camp in New Mexico. He escaped, he says, because he feared that he would be sent post-war to his native Poland, where the Russians would bother him. He learned English, married, kept quiet, and finally turned himself in at age 65. He was (correctly) never prosecuted. He became an American citizen a couple of years ago, and lives today, age 90, in Colorado.
