While mentioning issues that should be discussed by the presidential candidates (see commentary), we should add the heartbreaking cost of many prescription drugs. The history of the matter is shameful. Prices are rising at a rate of more than 10 percent a year. Treatments for cancer or multiple sclerosis can run more than $100,000 a year. Even those with Rx insurance have to come up with at least $5,000 annually before their policies kick in. This is prohibitive for many older people as well as for millions of any age who have families to support.. The poor get government help, but many others have to choose between staying well and going broke.
