Ultimate Performance

20 Unit Limit - the MINIMUM per side

Too easy - perhaps

Forces the AI to choose - spend too much time choosing - easily dies

New challenge - take on enemy with ONLY your STARTING units

Limited resources and armies - since units count for BOTH

Incredibly stupid if you like graphics and the whole TA point of hundreds/thousands of units

But on old comps, slashing the number of moving pixels makes RESPONSIVENESS fly.

Try on TA Kingdoms as well!

Fight Quality over quantity - spam fast strike force or build up powerful units slower

Offense/Defense/Resource/Factory splits

5 Offense units
5 Defenses
5 Resource Generators
5 Producers

In such circumstances, swarms would seem to be key, but in large maps, the enemy may have time to build that one unit that reduces your swarm to bones.

Swarms do not work on Monarchs with their powerful spells and attacks when not recharging - Commanders have a weak laser and then the D Gun - which requires energy that they can not probably manufacture - yet even with a weak laser I doubt 10 - 15 level one units can take out a commander - without terrain help, of course. As for the Monarchs, I doubt they start able to cast spells - but Elsin sword, Kirenna trident, Thirsha spear and Lokken stave should do more respectable damage than a gang of tier one units can take.

Lokken can cloak AND build ALL structures - do NOT leave Taros alone!!!

Monarchs/Commanders become extremely valuable. Turn off their death flag for an even more grueling match between survivors, in the spirit of TOTAL Annihilation.

Certainly not for everyone. Up it to say, 50 unit limit if you want more options and have it still resemble an RTS game you know of.

I hate the frantic pace of RTS. Crippling the unit and facility limits mean I can doddle along as if it was a TBS. I do not like pressure, and I do not compete with others - I know I am not skilled enough, I have nothing to prove. What you have in me is a single player fan, one the so called “communities” at large know nothing of, cause there has never been a chat, a post, a game or a hiccup from them. But I ADORED the lore, the units, the legends, and everything else. I only discovered TA recently, I picked up TA Kingdoms loooong ago and loved loved it. Even for losers like me if you lost a campaign mission you could continue the story, something revolutionary and should be in more games to prevent hunt and peck searching for complete save files to get the full effect.

People hated the extremely strong defenses of TA Kingdoms - I loved them, being a defensive player myself - I love to see a wall of gold Strongholds, Bastions or Mortars that no enemy has a hope of getting through unkilled. Dull to most people, but a gamer games the way they want for the most enjoyment, not to cater to others. I have fun or I do not play. People can harp about the spirit of competition, but there is no lore in soulless skirmishes, the only story being on the map names. As a fantasist I want far more, and get it with the campaign missions.

Wish Kingdoms was as easy to mod as TA - the new mods and campaigns overwrite my old ones, so I am stuck with all that 4.1 BB patch offers and nothing more.

It is enough, because I make my own mods and challenges within the existing framework like the above example. Certainly not for everyone, but I like the RTS Ground Control idea - it is how you use the units, not what you produce. Units are a NON renewable resource, use them well or fail, and you cannot rely on reinforcements. By enforcing a phantom use only starting units option, or produce only units you start with, I am emulating that groundbreaking spirit. Whether these options even make the game winnable is as yet undiscovered - in the final mission with only a commander, and only 20 units to build - it will probably end up as Commander Vs Commander grudge duel.

But would not that be fun?

Without D-Guns, too, as neither can marshal the energy - unless they built 19 solars or something. A plink, potshot duel of the very light lasers. God, that would take an eon. No one has the patience for that. No one has that much time.

Right?
