Donald Trump has become quite the magnet for publicity. In office less than two months, Trump already has the makings of being America’s least prepared and worst president.
His election should be a teachable moment for what can happen when people allow their emotions, no pun intended, to trump their common sense. Many poor Whites enthusiastically and naively supported Trump. They really, really believed that a man who courted the rich for 70 years would somehow be their champion. Do I hear chuckles?
He told his “fans” he wanted to “drain the swamp.” Yet he stacked his cabinet with billionaires and fat cats. His proposal to replace “Obamacare” would have had a decidedly disparate impact on the very poor Whites who supported him, who didn’t the the Affordable Care Act and Obamacare were the same thing. No doubt, his upcoming tax proposal will be more of the same. He is expected to try and reward the rich with significant tax cuts. But we must fight him.
On the flip side, those who opposed Trump from the beginning must continue in whatever legal means fits their circumstances and personalities. Everyone who opposed what Trump stands for should be encouraged by the defeat of his proposal to overturn the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare.
In the black community, a word of caution. We have to, we must become more skilled at multi-tasking. Critcizing and opposing Trump is a good thing. It’s a wonderful and intelligent thing. But we cannot take our eyes of the problems that often make our communities challenging places to live, work and raise children.
We need to be just as vocal and just as involved on these issues as we are in protesting what Trump represents.
• Crime
• Local Elections
• Safe Neighborhoods
• Better Nutrition education
• Better schools and education, and more
So, the fascination with all things Trump is understandable. But we also have other issues that are every bit as important to deal with in our backyards. Let’s not forget this.
