They took advantage of some sound concepts and philosophies that are very hard to understand, useless to those without discipline and strong minds.

All to easy, people of a certain standard of living and education level generally see through the charade of traditional western religion and lose it, the effects of the VietNam war also played helped pave the way. I am often critical of the RC as suppressive force that seeks to prevent people form self actualization and free thought , this inauthentic New Age movement is the same thing but it is even insidious because it's programing comes in through back door like a computer virus and installs on people who think they are freeing themselves from some of the old control systems.
