MY FAVORITE AMERICAN BIOGRAPHER, MARI SANDOZ. Sandoz (1896 – 1966) was a first generation American born to Jules Ami Sandoz, a Swizz immigrant and Nebraska homesteader. Mari, with only an 8th grade education, was determined to write at an early age. Her father, Jules, was an eccentric, domineering and oft-times cruel man who told her ‘writers and artists are the maggots of society.’ On his death bed, much to Mari’s surprise, Jules asked her to write his biography.
