Living in Mexico, I don't notice a thing from the drug lords. None of the action happens anywhere anyone cares about. It is all in hell holes or out in the jungle. Normal Mexican life does not see it at all. Occasionally you will see the police pull over an obvious drug dealer car but that's about it.
Some regions are war zones. No one goes into the bad regions. If you stay out of them, it is just ordinary life.
However, after Trump took out some of the trash, it is not a good idea to go out after dark, except in the best areas. If you do go out after dark you had better be driving and there are now laws that you don't have to stop for red lights after 11PM to avoid the types of thugs Trump has already sent down. This is true even in the top notch areas. So things are changing. It is noticeably very much more dangerous, but it is not from the drug lords, it is from the deportation of criminals. Regardless of what people say about Trump not doing anything, Mexico absolutely flipped poles and is now littered with the worst trash people. Their own trash, returned. No one is happy about it.
