Going out for a meal tonight but don’t want to ruin all your hard work?

Going out for a meal should be enjoyable. There is no reason why you should avoid it. Being Menu Smart is the key.

Avoiding fried food is a must. Don’t be afraid to ask how things are cooked. Food such as risotto and meals made in creamy sauces can be very calorific so try and go for tomato based sauces particularly when choosing pasta dishes.

When choosing meat go for sirloin steak, pork tenderloin or lamb shank as they tend to be leaner (contain less fat). Fish is always a healthier choice as they are high in protein, low in fat and a very good source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Shellfish is also a good choice. There is a lot of speculation that eating shellfish can cause high cholesterol. However, recent research shows that including shell fish in a balanced diet can help lower cholesterol and also provide other health benefits. Shellfish is high in protein, low in fat, rich in vitamins and minerals and an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids which are good for your heart.

Try and avoid chips, roasted potatoes, mashed potato and white rice. These foods can contain high amounts of fat and are also know to be high GI. Choose boiled potatoes, spaghetti, sweet potatoes, noodles, whole wheat pasta or baked potatoes as they are lower in fat and will release energy slowly making you feel fuller for longer.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a cheeky vino or two (or three!). If you know you are going out for a meal, be snack smart through out the day so you can allow for a drink or two. It’s not a crime!
