Following clashes between Dakota Access Pipeline protesters and law enforcement Sunday, the AP has reported, citing the Indigenous Environmental Network, that at least 17 people have been taken to the hospital after officers sprayed water on protesters in below-freezing temperatures. Some of them were reportedly cases of hypothermia. Local news outlet Bismarck Tribune reported, citing a medical group in the protest camp, that 26 people have been seriously injured. According to Morton County, ND, Law Enforcement, one officer was hit in the head with a rock, but law enforcement officials have not received any official report of injuries to the protesters. The use of water to disperse the protesters has come under criticism from groups such as Amnesty International and others, who say it made dozens hypothermic, but law enforcement defended its use Monday as “the best option we had.” According to AP, Mandan, ND, Police Chief Jason Ziegler says authorities won't rule out using water again if it's deemed necessary.
