Donald Trump:
The Republicans’ Frankenstein Monster
For years, Republicans have courted bigots, and they weren't shy about it. They’ve spewed hate, and they’ve waged a slew of not-so-subtle racial attacks on President Obama for nearly eight years.
Trump is the Republican’s Frankenstein monster coming home to roost. Their race-oriented politics paved the way for a Trump. But now, they have the nerve to be embarrassed by him. This, even though he is the culmination of the seeds they have sown for decades.
Trump is popular with those who skew towards bigotry because he has taken the Republican playbook, and he is saying what racists normally say in private. He is making it politically correct to express racist views.
His entire campaign can be summarized in two words: insults and slurs. At his rallies, he has played the role of demagogue and bully. He has encouraged his "fans" to attack protesters. But this country was founded on the right to protest. Of course, his fans wouldn't know anything about that, because they probably don't read.
In Chicago and Dayton, Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, caught up with him. Like breadcrumbs, the clashes between his supporters and protesters can be traced right back to Trump's confrontational rhetoric. This thing could very well get out of control fast.
Trump's "fans" believe he's some kind of savior. But they're delusional. Moreover, nothing he has advocated addresses jobs for Americans. A major reason American workers are losing jobs is they have not increased their job skills or their education to keep up with foreign competition. But business also has to share some responsibility for this situation.
In other countries, businesses set up apprentice programs to train workers. In this country, businesses either allow jobs to go unfilled, or they import workers with the skills they need. Instead of dealing with these truths, Trump has waged a campaign befitting a demagogue.
Fact is, the world is much more competitive than it used to be. Yet many of Trump’s supporters still think they can land good jobs with barely a high school education. They also think being white is the only qualification they need in this new, competitive world. Again, they're delusional.
Rather than blaming the person in the mirror for not going back to school, or asking businesses to step up with apprenticeships, they resort to bigotry, and they are prepared to blame anyone who doesn't look like them for their plight in life.
Despite Trump fans’ tendency to use minorities as some sort of scapegoat, here's one fact all Americans should know. A large number of America's soldiers are minorities. Those soldiers are risking their lives in service of this country. Meanwhile, many of Trump's fans are content to slug beer and whine about making America great again. One way to make America great again is to reinstate the draft.
Then, the lazy beer drinkers who give lip service about loving America will have a chance to prove their love. Then, it won't just be the poor and minorities who are disproportionately serving in the military, everybody will have a fair shot at serving.
