Donald Trump:
The Republicans’ Frankenstein Monster
For years, Republicans have courted bigots. They’ve spewed hate, and they’ve waged a slew of not-so-subtle racial attacks on President Obama for nearly eight years. Trump is the Republican’s Frankenstein monster coming home to roost. He reminds them of the seeds they’ve sown, and many Republicans seem embarrassed at their creation.
Trump is popular because he has taken the Republican playbook and expanded on it. His entire campaign has been what he's against: his rivals, other groups, and illegal immigrants. At his rallies, he also has played the part of ringmaster while encouraging his “fans” to attack protesters. But this country was founded on the right to protest. Does “taxation without representation” come to mind? People have a right to protest.
In Chicago and Dayton, Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, where he encouraged fans to throw protesters out, finally caught up with him. Clashes between his supporters and protesters erupted. Who knows how far this will go?
Nothing Trump has advocated addresses jobs for Americans who believe he is their savior. One reason American workers are losing jobs is they have have not increase their job skills or their education.
Business also has to share some responsibility with this situation. In other countries, business sets up apprentice programs to train workers. In this country, business either allows jobs to go unfilled, or they import workers with the skills they need. Instead of dealing with these truths, Trump has waged a campaign befitting a demagogue.
Fact is, the world is much more competitive than it used to be. Yet many of Trump’s supporters still think they can land good jobs with barely a high school education. They also think being white is the only qualification they need in this new, competitive world.
Rather than blaming the person in the mirror for not going back to school, or asking business to step up with apprenticeships, they resort to bigotry and are prepared to lash out at anyone who doesn't look like them. That approach, however, is causing deep divisions in this country as you can see at Trump rallies.
Despite Trump fans’ tendency to blame minorities for everything, they fail to realize that a large number of America's soldiers are minorities. Those soldiers are risking their lives in service of the country while Trump’s fans drink beer and whine about making America great again.
One way to make America great again is to reinstate the draft. Then, we will have a military where everyone, not just the poor and minorities, will get to serve their country.
