Click, selfie, tweet, FB, trending… this is how we communicate today. Communication is fast and can reach a number of people in an instant, but the question is, where is the Filipino language in this era? As we celebrate `Buwan ng Wika’, let’s take a closer look. When we go to social networking sites or even when we just surf the internet, we encounter different people, with different cultures and different languages as well. We are hooked to use English to do business deals and often it’s cool to use French when we are talking about fashion, Italian for food, Japanese for Manga, and Korean for K-pop. Sometimes we mimic different accents to play around, but still when we are hurt we can’t do away without saying ‘aray’. When we wanted to say our sincerest gratitude to the world when they helped us after Yolanda typhoon, we said `salamat` instead of thank you. Some say that Filipinos are losing its identity and we aren’t using our language anymore buy I say No. We are not. We are just evolving and adapting same way with other languages who borrows words. I’m sure everyone knows about the words `boondoks` or `Imeldific` being in the English dictionary when internet is not yet around. Go on it at the library, I’m sure they have a vast collection of references. Our language is still alive, we just need to participate and be heard in the global village. Let’s spot and find some Filipino words in international magazines, newspapers, and internet blogs. There are hundreds of ways to check and it’s just a click away and if we can’t find any, let’s try to have one trending. We can use the the hashtags #FilipinoWikaNgPagkakaisa and #BuwanNgWika.
