Conducted by Ms. Tanya Fernandes and Ms. Sidra Rana
The CPD on phonics was a very interactive session. It started with the explanation of what phonics is and what the objectives of phonics and the 6 stages of phonics are. Then we moved on to what Jolly Phonics was in specific and the 5 characteristics of jolly phonics. 2 activities were conducted – Scoop and spell, where the participants had to scoop out a handful of magnetic letters and try to form 2/3/4/5 syllable words with the same. The second game was ‘Bingo’ – where participants at random wrote 16 letters and as the teacher said the letter sound the participants were striking off the corresponding letter. The session later progressed onto ‘Guided Reading’ which specified the essence of reading to students and aiding them to read. Strategies to reading were discussed. Three activities were conducted. Firstly, ‘Describe and write – where participants were segregated in groups of 3. One would describe a picture while the other two wrote the nouns and verbs they heard. Second was ‘Make a para’ - where words were given one after the other and the participants had to frame sentences joining it to the previous sentence to form a paragraph. The third game was ‘Form a story’ – where participants we given the beginning of the story and all had to form a story by saying no more than one to two words and linking it.
