As the automobile companies struggle to persuade motorists to buy battery-operated vehicles, it’s interesting to recall that the industry was once faced with the process in reverse. In the early 1900s, electric vehicles were preferred to those running on gasoline. Drivers liked them because they were simpler to operate and more comfortable. Some 30,000 were on the roads at one point, and Thomas Edison lent his name to the Edison Electric (1907-1939). Alas, over time, they could not be produced as inexpensively as the gas guzzlers, and the rest is unfortunately history.
