An FBI official tells Motherboard that its Twitter account @FBIRecordsVault was dormant for more than a year due to a bug in the agency's CMS. The official says the flood of tweets on Sunday was due to the IT team pushing a patch to the CMS, fixing the bug, and the Tuesday tweet on the William J. Clinton Foundation and controversial pardon of Marc Rich was published because the documents were posted that day. Earlier, we noted a ThinkProgress report that the FBI has launched an internal investigation into the tweets. The FBI hasn't officially commented on these documents since Tuesday, saying they were made available under "standard procedure for FOIA." The timing of these tweets and Director James Comey's letter to Congress on emails that could be pertinent to the Hillary Clinton private server investigation have been questioned due to their release so close to Election Day. There have been several election-related FBI leaks to the media since then.
